Montana Substations: (all remaining substations are style 2)

#02 Loweth - right by highway, interesting location.

#08 Gold Creek - easily accessible.

#09 Ravenna - right across river from I-90, take your telephoto. Looks beat up.

#10 Primrose - excellent condition, takes an excellent picture almost anytime of day.

Gone in Montana: Twodot (#1), Francis (#3), Eustis (#4)(razed spring 2001), Piedmont (#5), Janney (#6), Morel (#7), Tarkio (#11), Drexel (#12), and East Portal (#13), now a parking lot for the Hiawatha Trail.

Idaho's only Substation was at Avery (#14) long gone.

Washington Substations:

#21 Taunton - demolished in 2005 by local owner / rancher.

#24 Cle Elum - In the process of being restored by the DNR and the Cle Elum Society. Funding started being in place by 2007.. See their Website. Also read under depots and other structures below.

#27 Renton - Good Condition, being used as an office for a couple of businesses.

Gone in Washington: Doris (#22), Kittitas (#23), Hyak (#25), Cedar Falls (#26), and Tacoma (#28).

Montana on Main:

Roundup, Harlowton, Placed on "National Register of Historic Places" Martinsdale, Ringling, Maudlow, Three Forks & the Sacajawea Inn, Placed on "National Register of Historic Places" Bozeman, Butte, Deer Lodge, Missoula, Placed on "National Register of Historic Places" and Superior.

Drummond Depot now at Fort Missoula, MT. Part of the museum site.

Alberton - Placed on "National Register of Historic Places". The station is used as Senior's Center and Library. It is well preserved. Just west of the station and on the old right of way are a rib-side caboose and a baggage car now housing a Milwaukee Road museum. The museum contains items mainly from the Missoula Seniority District including numerous photos, stove heaters, whistles from a box cab, trolley wire, a Wylie Controller off E-21 Little Joe, and train orders as well as numerous other items. Hours of operation: Thursday, Friday, Sat from 1300k to 1630k.

Also still standing: Ingomar (still has a tender from an S-2 there, had been used as a water supply while Milw Rd was there), Miles City (used by school district), Miles City freight house is the Wool Museum, Ryegate possibly moved off site and used by a farmer.

Off Main in Montana:

Gallatin Gateway Inn, a former Milwaukee Road Hotel. Placed on "National Register of Historic Places" Direct link to their Website.

Great Falls, Placed on "National Register of Historic Places", White Sulphur Springs, Clinton, Lewistown (Yogo Inn), Danvers (Privately owned), Geraldine, restored. Placed on "National Register of Historic Places", Arrow Creek (privately owned), Pownal (off property, privately owned), Christina (off property, privately owned) , Grassrange (used privately as feed storage), Winnett, Winifred (used as grain storage), Suffolk, and Roy.

Idaho:

Avery - Placed on "National Register of Historic Places" by the local Citizen's Committee Group. Funding in place to replace the foundation. On a trip Sept 12th, I was told they were just going to lower the building onto its new foundation the very next day. On April 21st I found out on "egroups" that the town of Avery is trying to procure a Hiawatha Passenger Car.

St. Maries - now HQ for the St. Maries River Railroad, in good condition.

Plummer Jct. - Overgrown remains, plus weeded track.

Washington:

Warden - Depot has been moved and appears to be a museum.

Othello - nothing left except Columbia Basin Railway trackage. 2 cabooses are here (under restoration ??

Kittitas - Depot Placed on "National Register of Historic Places". Getting pretty run down.

Cle Elum - Trailhead. The depot and Substation Placed on "National Register of Historic Places". There is now an ongoing project in a partnership with the Cle Elum Restoration Society and Washington State Parks and numerous other interested parties to restore the station. The three operator's houses are still standing as well and used as private residences. The old crew house is now an excellent B&B named the "Iron Horse Inn" (Placed on "National Register of Historic Places") with lots of Milwaukee Road memorabilia. Link to Iron Horse B&B Website. Not to be missed is the museum that was just recently forced to vacate its premises in Tacoma and has found a new home in the "Telephone Museum" at Cle Elum, located at 221 East First Street (Main Street across the DQ). Hours are 1200 noon to 400pm Saturdays and Sundays in the summer, but if you call Sarah at (590) 674-5702 she will be happy to open it for you on little notice. Excellent Milwaukee Road artifacts.

Hyak - Some company houses left. A 40' dilapidated reefer. Trailhead.

Cedar Falls - Nothing much left except the foundation for the substation. Trailhead.

Seattle - Union Station was owned by the UP and at present is under restoration.

Off Main Line in Washington State:

Everett Branch: Carnation, Duvall, Monroe, Snohomish and Everett.

Sumas Branch: Bellingham, Hampton, Saar Creek Canyon, Glacier, Maple Falls. (One page)

South of Seattle: Raymond (fuel tower), Morton, Kent, Chehalis, Maytown (company houses, speeder shack).

Olympic Peninsula Branch: Port Townsend Ferry slip, Dungeness Howe Truss Bridge Placed on "National Register of Historic Places", Port Angeles, Joyce (log depot).
